POLICE CHECK FOR THE SECURITY LICENCE IN ONTARIO?

Starting February 18, 2024, obtaining a security guard license in Ontario will require a separate Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC). This check, unlike the Standard Criminal Record check, includes information on outstanding charges, warrants, and judicial orders. Previously, this check was part of the license application process. It’s important to note that the Ministry does not accept third-party providers for this check; it must be completed through a police service. When applying for your police check, select Employment as the purpose.

For information on the cost and processing times of criminal record checks, refer to the list below. Keep in mind that prices and processing times may change. Most police agencies offer the option to apply for the criminal record check online. You can initiate your police check up to 6 months before submitting your security license application.

It’s not mandatory to complete the criminal record check before taking the Ministry test for your security license; it can be done afterward. However, it’s advisable to apply for your police check as soon as possible.

We recommend completing the CRJMC online whenever feasible to receive a digital copy of your results. This enables you to upload them directly to Service Ontario’s website when applying for your license. If you receive a physical copy, you’ll need to mail your license application to Service Ontario, which would lengthen the processing time.
